The cultivation of sugar cane has always played a major role in the history and economy of Guadeloupe Islands.
Five islands form the Guadeloupe archipelago, Basse-Terre, Grande-Terre, La Désirade, Les Saintes and Marie-Galante.
Marie-Galante is at the heart of rum production in Guadeloupe. Better known as the 'Big Pancake' due to its circular and flat shape, this island 158 km² has no less than 3 distilleries. The presence of these distilleries on this small island shows the importance of sugar cane production during the colonial past.
